Everybody Dance Now

Location: Wolverhampton GB
Website: http://t.co/1L4ypR3zmJ

Everybody Dance Now is a Cultural Olympiad project in the West Midlands, part of Dancing for the Games. It is being undertaken by Central Youth Theatre. The project will culminate in August 2011 with a two week festival across venues in Wolverhampton, with 6 international youth theatres taking part. Central Youth Theatre will perform 4 original plays based on local memories of dance halls and dancing days from 1930s, to the Ballroom of the 1940s, the Rock'n'roll era of the early 60s and Northern Soul in the 70s. They will also premiere a documentary film exploring the history of Asian dance in the area. The project also includes an exhbition of memories called "And We Went Dancing..." which will be shown at the Wolverhampton Art Gallery, and an interactive web recreation of the old dance halls. As part of the site specific nature of the project, Wolverhampton's old Low Level Railway Station is being transformed into a ballroom, where several of the plays will be performed. Performances will also take place in the Newhampton Arts Centre, the Arena Theatre, the Slade Rooms and Bilston Town Hall. A programme of dance performances and public social dances taking place in the Wulfrun Hall will complement the festival. Blog: everybodydancenow2011.wordpress.com
