Bio

Gift of Life Michigan's mission is to improve and extend the lives of the citizens of the state of Michigan by increasing public and professional participation in organ and tissue donation for transplantation. We are the federally designated organ and tissue recovery organization for the state of Michigan. In cooperation with the Michigan Eye-Bank we offer all services needed for the donation of organs, tissues and eyes for transplantation, therapy, research and education.

In cooperation with the Michigan Department of State we house the Michigan Organ Donor Registry, which is accessed to determine the donation wishes of the deceased upon every hospital death and many deaths outside the hospital setting. The registry is a confidential, 24 hours a day, computerized database that documents your wish to become an organ, tissue and eye donor.

Upon every hospital death, Gift of Life Michigan is notified. Having your donor registry form on file helps to ensure that your decision to become a donor is carried out. Even when you sign the donor registry it is ESSENTIAL THAT YOUR FAMILY KNOWS your wishes.

As of January 2007, all Michigan residents signing up on the Donor Registry will receive a red heart donor sticker for the front of their driver's license or state ID card from the Michigan Department of State. Those who do not have a Michigan license or ID card can still sign up in Michigan, but you will not receive a red heart donor sticker.

You can sign up on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry at http://www.giftoflifemichigan.org or call 800-482-4881 or visit any Secretary of State branch office. Gift of Life Michigan's customer service hotline is 866-500-5801, ext. 1411.
