John Deri, M.D.

Bio

John Deri, MD is a Columbia University graduate, where he completed his medical studies. He did his undergraduate work in psychology and anthropology at Columbia College. He received an M.A. in psychology from the New School for Social Research. Dr. Deri has a solo practice in Mill Valley and has been in private practice since 1987. He completed his psychiatric residency training at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and became a board certified psychiatrist in 1989. Dr. Deri invokes the spirit of compassion throughout his practice. He is guiding many people through a transformation and healing process. He offers psychotherapy, and provides consultation and treatment to clients with a wide variety of issues and concerns. He skillfully considers the use of medication when someone's symptoms are interfering with the capacity to cope with daily life. The treatment approach is tailored to the individual, with regard to style, substance and duration. His extensive training in both psychodynamic psychology as well as in biological psychiatry allows him to provide a comprehensive assessment of human suffering. He has a particular interest in working with people who are anxious and depressed. As well, he has helped many trauma survivors to heal their wounds. He is passionate about assisting clients to achieve freedom and peace, when they are challenged by life circumstances. He has additional special interests in the treatment of addictions, and in sport psychiatry. Beyond his life as a psychiatrist, he is an active triathlete. His athletic experiences, as well as his life long immersion in Taoism and Tibetan Buddhism, have heightened his awareness of the crucial importance of physical activity and of spiritual life to emotional well being, and to healing. His work experience has included many years on Active Staff at California Pacific Medical Center, Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and Ross Hospital (adult psychiatry and chemical dependency).
