My son was a late-talker and we struggled with communication until he was about 3 - 3 1/2 when the words finally started to come. His temper-tantrums were frequent and would last for up to an hour. Nothing I tried helped. My daughter came 5 years later and it was when she was 6 months old I heard about signing with your baby. I decided to give it a try. What a gift. Because of signing she was always able to communicate her needs and wants to me and as a result our bond was very strong and she always felt understood. If she had a temper-tantrum it was quick (3-5 minutes) and it was because she couldn't have the item she wanted - not because I didn't understand. It made for such a valuable parenting experience the 2nd time around that I felt like more people should know about signing with their young child. I didn't understand why no-one had told me about this with my son and why I hadn't heard about this when I was teaching elementary school (as the research I read highly supported using sign language in the classroom with hearing children for better learning of new words - and more!) I decided to start sharing my new found knowledge. Here it is almost 3 years later. I have a wonderful preschool enrichment program where I have teachers following my lesson plans and we go into many daycares and teach babies, toddlers and preschoolers how to sign through stories, songs, activities and more. We are located in the Albany, NY area. I also speak and write on the subject. 4 of my workshops are coming out in DVD and/or online download format and I have a baby sign lnauge online club coming out in August of 2009 where enrollees get a new video sent to their email inbox onced a week that holds their hand and teaches them step by step how to sign.
