Tweets, retweets, links & feeds promoting Leicester and Leicestershire since 2010 (account originally launched as @LeicesterMayor). Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands of England, with a population of around 330000 at the time of the 2011 census. It has been renowned as a place to visit, work and settle for the past 2000 years. Our population is the most ethnically diverse in the UK outside London. Leicester is also a notable centre for culture and sport. Our Comedy Festival, held in February each year, is the largest of its type in Europe, and the local radio station, BBC Radio Leicester, is the oldest in the UK, having begun broadcasting in November 1967. Accomplished sports clubs include the Leicester Tigers rugby union team, Leicester City Football Club, Leicestershire County Cricket Club and the Leicester Riders basketball team. Places of potential interest to visitors include the National Space Centre, the Curve theatre and the Guildhall, which is currently staging an exhibition featuring King Richard III whose remains lay in Leicester for over 400 years before being excavated in 2012. The city prides itself on being a centre of learning, as the home of two world class universities: the University of Leicester and De Montfort University. Further details on the city can be accessed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leicester. In addition, LeicesterVoice generates two daily online bulletins (available via paper.li) - the Leicester Daily and #Leicester Echo. These provide invaluable and accessible means of following people and events in the city.
