Conrad Fulke Thomond O’Brien-ffrench was a distinguished British Secret Intelligence Officer, Captain in the Tipperary Rangers of the Royal Irish Regiment and 16th The Queen's Lancers in World War I, and Mountie for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was awarded the Mons Star, the British War Medal (Squeak), the Allied Victory Medal (Wilfred), and Knight of Honour and Devotion. During the Battle of Mons (WWI), Conrad was captured and transferred to POW camp in Augustabad. Here he transmited details of troop movements and strategic information from incoming prisoners to Cathleen Mann, secretary to Stewart Menzies of British counterintelligence. After the war, Conrad was summoned to Whitehall to meet Colonel Stewart Menzies who recruited Conrad into MI6. Conrad served as SIS Agent ST36 in MI6 and later Agent Z3 for Claude Dansey's Z Organization. Using the business cover of Tyrolese Tours, he was based in Kitzbuhel, Austria where he met Peter and Ian Fleming, often crossing paths at homes of mutual friends, at bars, or on the ski slopes. His cover as spy was compromised after the Austrian Anschluss and he was listed in the Nazi's Black Book, one of the most-wanted Brits to be arrested upon Nazi Germany's invasion of Britain in WWII.
