Former President Bill Clinton was "spot on" when he called Child
Obesity the "Single
greatest tragedy facing our society today". And the world is just
waking up to the damage we're doing to our kids
long term.
I'm not talking about the poor kids who have medical conditions that
influence their weight - I'm referring to the average kids who have had
no guidance or parental input to help them keep the weight off. I see
it every day. It makes me feel angry. It makes me feel sad...
Just think of the mental and physical trauma we put our kids through if
we let them pile on the weight...buying clothes that look like
tents...ridicule at school...avoiding the cinema because they cannot
fit into the seat...making excuses to get out of any form of
exercise...watching their friends playing ball in the park...and so
much more
It's agony for most obese kids....and Who's to blame? Is it because the
child is "chubby"? Boloney! Is he "big boned"?
Nonsense! He's obese, fat, overweight - pure and simple Mr and
Mrs Parent - generally because YOU set the example by sitting on the
couch munching nachos and watching TV every night, whilst your kids eat
what they like, when they like, whilst they play TV games in their
bedroom. It's because YOU fill the fridge and the cupboards with junk -
because you're lazy. And it's because YOU can't be bothered to play
ball in the park with the kids or go for a walk or jog.
YOU cannot see the true damage you're doing by opting out of this
issue. And before you write and tell me that I'm a total "no nothing,
arrogant shit" (email from last week) and that you're a caring,
wonderful, loving parent (which you may well be!) I'm giving you the
picture that I see - every day. So, if your kids are overweight, then
go and look in the mirror.
This is a wake up call - I make no apology for being blunt. Go do something about
it.
