On a sunny Sunday afternoon, September 23rd, 2007, youth in Hancock County involved in ECLIPSe came together for their annual retreat to kick off and plan the upcoming year. One of the members left the retreat and minutes later was involved in an unfortunate car accident that took his life. As young leaders in Hancock County, the group struggled with what do we do? Upon much consideration and discussion, these young people decided the best way to honor their friend, who loved soccer, was to try to organize a soccer tournament. This was a daunting task, but the group began investigating the possibility and after several months some partnerships began to develop. The Liberty Benton High School varsity soccer team and parents became interested in the cause and together the groups began the process of developing a soccer tournament from basically ground zero. This has provided a vast service learning experience for the youth as they are working side by side with adults in planning and organizing such an event.
