Riding high off their placement in the Top 3 of Rutherford Weekend’s Battle of the Bands 2009 where these Hip Hop heads left a non-rap audience declaring “you guys ROCK!” the BUNKS are back at it with their eighth album since 2003, Soul Rebel Music. The follow-up to Generica takes a step back from critical social narratives (consumerism, obesity, addiction) and dives deep into the personas of Joshua (Smo) and Joshua (Gro). Have you ever wondered what Simon & Garfunkel on crunk juice riding around in a drop top 6-4 with the Beastie Boys sounds like? BUNKS have been described in those exact words. “We’re super bad with this Hip Hop,” is the mantra repeated during the hook of “Superbad” while the guys are “Searching For That Simple Life” they make sure everyone knows these “Gladiators” from Manchester, Tennessee “are what we are cause these BUNKS ain’t never cared”. This year brings the birth of Smo’s third child and the beginning of fatherhood for Gro. Smo graduates in December 2009 from Middle Tennessee State University with Bachelor’s degrees in Music Business and Anthropology and minors in Entrepreneurship and Recording Industry: Production and Technology. Gro still dreams of the day he can break free from his cubicle and focus his energies into creating songs, playing shows, and developing new talent. Until then, take what you got, make what you can. The BUNKS recently announced that 100% of sales from their single “Coffee Flavored Memories” will be given to the Hillsboro Community Backpack Program.
