Outreach Uganda

Location: Colorado
Website: http://outreachuganda.org

Outreach Uganda works with women's groups in Uganda to help them become self-sustaining. Most of the women are Acholi women from northern Uganda who fled the 20 year old internal war in Uganda, or are still living in villages in northern Uganda.
OU helps these women and their families build meaningful lives for themselves. We help them sell their craft products (paper beaded jewelry, tie dyed silk scarves and batik sling bags) in the U.S., we work with them on starting both group and indivual income-generating projects that they can do in Uganda, and we help provide training for them on leadership, business, computer and English and literacy.
We help provide sponsorship and/or scholarship monies so that one child from each of their families can complete secondary school. On a very limited basis, we also offer some university scholarship monies.
The women's groups we work with are unique in that they have fairly large internal revolving loan funds so they can lend to themselves at reasonable interest rates. We would like to help them expand these revolving loan funds further and also establish a method for allowing them to access home loan funds.
We are always looking for ways to partner with individuals and other nonprofits in our income-generation efforts with these women. As we expand to more villages in northern Uganda, we are very interested in information and contacts related to improved farming methods, agriculture, animal husbandry, irrigation and water.
